Mine safety education for children

January 14, 2026

In December 2025, up to 500 children from the Kharkiv region took part in a holiday event that combined care with mine safety education. Before the celebration, certified trainers from our partner organization, the Ukrainian Center for Humanitarian Protection, led sessions focused on the risks posed by mines and explosive remnants of war.

Children learned how to recognize dangerous objects, why they must never touch them, and how to act safely. Trainers demonstrated how a metal detector works, explained the role of sappers, and allowed children to interact with the equipment. Each child received notebooks and coloring books with clear mine-safety rules.

This education is essential. More than 574,000 hectares of agricultural land in Kharkiv Oblast remained potentially mined following the de-occupation in 2022. In 2025 alone, 62 civilian incidents were recorded, including injuries to children.
